Over the past forty years or so, Memorial Day has gone from a somber reflection of the young men buried in Veteran cemetaries to a joyous gala of thankless turds partying and celebrating another paid day off from work.
America needs to quit being ingrateful to the men who would rather die on their feet, than live on their knees. Every blessing we enjoy in this great nation was granted to us by the blood of soldiers, sailors, airmen, Coast Guardsmen, and Marines.
Memorial Day is our most solemn holiday. It, more than any other, defines who we are as a nation. Sure, the Fourth of July is a great day, but those men who Ben Franklin said "must stand together, or we shall all hang together," quickly turned to George Washington and said, "It would sure be nice if you'd keep King George from hanging us." And George Washington, and a lot of others, did. We owe these men our nation; we owe them our respect; we owe them our undying, unwavering gratitude.
Do not forget the reason for the season.

ReplyDeleteYou're damn right we do. Let us never forget our friends who have passed. Even more importantly, the strangers, those who gave their lives for the freedoms of people who do not even know their names. May they never be forgotten.
Amen, Jon. Teach that little princess of yours how to observe this holiday.
DeleteToo many Americans simply live here and not really LIVE here. When schools and parents quit teaching citizenship, American history, and what it means to be a patriot, we were sunk.
ReplyDeleteGunny,
DeleteWe have to take back our schools, that's got to be the first objective.
