Why We Are Free

Lest we forget, this is the real founding document of the greatest nation on Earth.  This document says that we are all born free men, and We decide who we will allow to govern us.  This document came about because of the distrust our previous governors begat by the abuse of the power We gave them.  Perhaps today we all should reread it to remind those in charge that we reserve the right to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America
When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. — Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:
For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies
For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.
We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. — And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

    Do you have a problem with people having the right to their opinion? How about freedom of religion? What about the freedom to assemble peacefully? It seems to me that you have a hard time with anyone but you exercising their GOD GIVEN rights. You are a bigot, a bully, and a leading example of the hypocrasy of the left.

    I don't positively believe God picks who he will save and who will either burn or blink out. I believe God helps those that help themselves. I believe God created our universe, maybe He created everything. I don't believe in Adam and Eve, with the possible exception that they are what scientists call the "missing link." I believe God created the world, and he knew when He stirred up the batter what would come out of the oven a few hours, (or millennia) later.

    I believe that God and science are not enemies. Having said that, I believe that science can go too far in trying to understand everything. Some things are better if you just sit back and admire the awesomeness of them.

    When I was in school, I asked an Algebra teacher a question. She replied to me that I would learn about that later, when we get into "imaginary" numbers. HA! Imaginary numbers is how scientists got Buzz Aldren and Niel Armstrong to land on the moon. There is no way you can tell me that does not require great FAITH. And I don't mean faith in the scientists.

    I think you are one of the people who is trying to bring down this nation. Your atheister than you attitude is pompous and arrogant and offensive, and you cry and whine to remove peoples rights because they disagree with you. Had that type of thinking prevailed 500 years ago, you would have been burned at the stake for your opinions on God. But because of the document we are discussing, you are free to publish and promote your hateful rants.

  4. Seems the religious types are the ones pushing their beliefs on others. If I don't want "your" god, why can't you just leave me alone. "GOD GIVEN rights" is a line of crap. God didn't give anyone any rights.

    And I just had a high school math teacher read your comments about "Imaginary numbers". He was miffed as to why you actually thought they were imaginary. All he could come up with is you don't even know what they are. Then he asked a funny question: Does being an "odd" number mean there is something wrong with that number? He thinks you must be "willfully ignorant" and that is why your type can't understand theories.

    By the way, have you figured out what is wrong with your "TenthGeneration" implication?

  5. I find it interesting that you could catch flak for republishing the Declaration of Independence. Think about it – on July 4th 1776 every man, woman, and child on earth was ruled by a king, queen, tribal chieftain, or similar despot. A truly remarkable group of unabashedly Christian men wrote this document pledging their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to support this Declaration. Eight and a half years later a few million newly minted Americans were the only free people on the face of the planet.

    While this would be news to our hapless President - America is an exceptional place and not only the greatest country in the world, but the greatest country in world history. Think of how arrogant one has to be to think that such an event wasn’t inspired by God. George Washington, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson who lived that era were all convinced that not only was the Revolution inspired by God but that actual miracles occurred that made success possible.

    What the hell are you talking about? Religious types are "forcing" you to be a dickhead? When atheists and secularists sue to have God removed from the public venue, they are forcing theior opinion on others. You are a minority. Your opinions on religion and the existence of God are only shared by a small portion of the population. Yet you and your kind feel you are right to force the rest of us to accept your pinheaded views, and demand that we live by them.

    As for imaginary numbers, the square root of -1 is an imaginary number. It does not exist on any number line, it cannot exist without violating all the other rules of math. Yet the fucking thing works. Even though it does niot fit into the established rules, it still works. That is because of God. You may disagree with me on that point, but you cannot prove it wrong anymore than I can prove it right. If your high school math teacher doesn't know what i is, he/she needs to go back to school.

    I'd love for you to explain whats wrong with my TenthGeneration "implication". I'm certain yopu have some lame brained bullshit that you find funny, but I bet you're wrong.

    Further, what the hell did God have to do with that war? And, no, the US was not the first democracy and it had nothing to do with 'Christians' either. Try to remember your world history, pal. Were you asleep during discussion of the Golden Age of [pagan] Greece?

    Being a Christian had very little to do with our desire to be free of colonial rule. England was a Christian nation and so was King George.

    If you wish to enter a debate, you ought to bring some knowledge to the table.

  8. Jeff- I may be able to shed some light on the subject of "imaginary numbers." As a bit of background, I have posted on this blog for several months and I have come to the conclusion that the 'regulars' who post here dwell in a parallel universe not unlike Disneyland.

    Facts and reality are optional. What is important to them is to defend their right-wing ideology even if it means making up stuff- imaginary facts.

    Thus the parallel universe which, I believe, explains 'imaginary numbers.'

  9. LOL – typical Mud assault. Insults and an exhibition of a superficial and no-doubt public school education. As I have told you before I am an historian. I would be happy to match historical fact any time you choose – though you always veer off into irrelevant insults. The last time you challenged me to explain something you complained that I went back to the root of the problem in 1910 – now you want to recall an irrelevant episode in 500 BC (Before Christ). As we have pointed out – were it not for double standards, liberals would have no standards at all.

    “Democracy” is not synonymous with “freedom” or good governance. Greece (I think you meant Athens - but who knows?) during whatever age you cite was not a true “democracy” but they did dabble in mob-rule – but that is irrelevant (liberal stock and trade) as we aren’t a “democracy” either. We are a Constitutional Republic. The magic that is America comes from the confluence of democratic principles, the rule of law, and for the most part a virtuous and religious (except for liberals) population.

    England was not a “Christian Nation” but rather a Monarchy that controlled a church.

    You might benefit from the comparison of two Revolutions that occurred about the same time. Compare the American Revolution with the French Revolution and determine the principle difference between the two. I suggest you not return until you can provide evidence that you understand.

    I’ll give you a hint. The American Revolution was supported and guided by people that we would today term “Christian Conservatives” while the French Revolution was prosecuted by people that we could only call “Liberal Anti-Religionists.” One revolution ended in freedom and the other ended in tyranny.

    This is pretty easy stuff really - do you want me to recommend a couple good books?
